I pulled a hard drive out of my old laptop, completely wiped it, and started to use it on my desktop. Sounds all good, right? WRONG. Here I am, a month later, and whenever i plug the SATA cord into it, my whole computer siezes up until I unplug it again. Can I fix this or just throw the POS out?

Hey there & welcome, @smithimitron!

It definitely doesn't sound good if the HDD is affecting your whole system when its connected! However, I'd recommend you try using a different SATA cable and plug it to a different SATA port on the motherboard to check how the performance will be afterwards. If it's still affecting the system poorly, you should probably try using an external connection via a SATA-to-USB cable with an AD adapter or a docking station/enclosure to test the HDD's health and SMART status using its brand-specific diagnostic tool. Another way to troubleshoot it would be to use a DOS version of such a utility and perform the tests without booting into Windows.

I hope you don't have any important data that is not...

I hope you don't have any important data that is not backed up on the drive. If it's truly failed, you might suffer the consequences of data loss. :( In the future, make sure you always keep at least two copies of your files stored in different storage locations/devices.

Hope it helps. Keep us posted!
