Gaming on 4K TV?

I am looking at upgrading my current system to break into the realm of 1440/4K gaming. Originally, I was thinking of going with a GTX 1070 and getting a monitor for 1440 at 60 Hz. All in all, I could do an upgrade like that for about $1200-$1300.

However, I (foolishly) bought a 4K (3840x2160) 120 Hz Sony TV (55 inch) a while ago. There really isnt much 4K content to be had for TV's in my world, and now a new thought has crossed my mind. Could I build a rig to game with my TV and circumvent the need for a monitor?

I figure I could use the money saved by not getting a monitor to get a GTX 1080 and improved CPU for only a little more capital then my original 1440 plan.

What I want to know is if this is possible? Did I get too big of a TV to build a PC to match? Also, I have never gamed at 4K, can anyone comment on the drawbacks from using a TV as opposed to a monitor?

Well RiverFly, I am gaming on a 60in 4k Samsung TV with no problems. The PC is connected via HDMI at the moment. Some have Display port connections which is better so i'm told. I too will go for the GTX 1070 or 1080 depending on price or availability where I am.
Check the available connections to your Sony. I believe you have HDMI. You will notice a tremendous difference at 120Hz at the higher 4k resolutions.
Get a good quality HDMI cable of less than 2 mtrs as long cables can have issues.

Yes I agree I have a hisense 50 inch 4k TV and I game on it with a 4gb gtx 960 currently until I can upgrade and I can get some games to run fine in 4k such as subnautica solus project Lego lotr but nothing like fallout 4 or GTA 5 so you should have no issues with the gtx 1070 in my opinion
