So, it won't boot - I can't access BIOS, there are no beeps (the mobo has audio & I have an additional speaker I plugged into the mobo), the fans are spinning, and the LEDs work. My monitor says it cannot detect VGA or HDMI, but when I use another monitor, the screen stays blank.
This is an entirely new system.
First off, let me start by saying that I've tried this all within the case and breadboarded on an insulated surface. I've put the memory in every slot. I've reset the CMOS battery. I've tried to start with only the psu, only the cpu, and various combinations of with or without the memory and video card.
I originally thought it was a graphics card issue, so I checked the cables on another monitor and the monitor on another computer. Both the cables and monitor worked fine. Then I took my graphics card and plugged it into another computer. The card works fine. FYI, there isn't an integrated card. So I ruled out an issue with my video card.
Next I tested the PSU. I got a spare 500W PSU that's known to work and tried to start up my computer with that. No change. I also checked all of the pins and wires to make sure they aren't damaged.
Since there are no beeps, and it's not the PSU, I figured it must be the mobo. Originally I had an M5A97 LE R2.0. So I returned that to Micro Center (a quite long and costly drive from where I am) and picked up the MSI 970 Gaming. Put the thing all together in the case and no change. I took it all out and attempted again outside of the case. With only certain parts, with the other PSU, etc.
Still no beeps.
I've gone through ""No POST", "system won't boot", and "no video output" troubleshooting checklist" that is so often posted on this forum. First with my first mobo, and again with my second to no avail. And I've google'd the heck out of this issue, trying everything I find. And asked my friends that work in IT - even though building computers from scratch isn't really their thing anymore.
I'm at a loss at what else to do. I've been at this for 16 days and I think it's driving me a bit nuts. This is my first time building my own computer from scratch, though I have put together computers before.
I can only guess that it's the CPU, but wouldn't the mobo still beep regardless of whether or not the CPU works? I don't have a spare CPU to test available. There's also a note on pzpartpicker that says "some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs" but that's an issue for after I actually get this thing started, right? I googled that and found that that's mostly an issue for when the processor originally came out, which was after the mobos were first released. I think I'm on a BIOS that is okay any way, making that note moot.
I'm hoping to figure out the real cause of my problem before driving down to Micro Center to return the product. I don't want to come home again only to find out that's not really my issue.
