GTX 970 or 980ti?

I recently have received a refund from NewEgg for returning my GTX 1070 FE. Mainly because the card was producing random dead pixels. And that uninstalling and updating drivers and ringing customer service and manufacturers from EVGA didn't do anything to fix it. So now that I have my $400 back, and I want to hear from you guys which would be a better card at the moment. Because I want to spend money on a card without spending entirely $400, maybe like at least 200 or 300 at the minimum, because I realized I've made a dumb mistake buying brand new cards at launch, and rely on the cards that have been around for a couple of years. I barely game on PC, but only on witcher 3 and overwatch, with my friends. But now after my mistake, I'm having trouble deciding whether I should save my money or just compensate it with a relatively decent card. Between a Gtx 970 or a 980 ti, but that 980 ti is still within a $400 range. I've recently heard about the AMD RX-480, but i'm not an AMD fan so that is clearly not my type of card, despite it being a reasonable price. With the 980 ti being equivalent price point as the 1070 right now, I don't know which would be a good choice based on little difference of performance that those cards produce. Or should I just wait until the new 1080 ti is announced, so that the price would drop on the 1080 and get that instead. Apologize if my story is really long, just trying to get my mind set from hearing your opinions, I appreciate any response from you guys. Thank you!

The 1070 and 1080 are in short supply right now as with every new GPU launch. Generally once they settle down and the price evens out they really dont drop in price that much. Buying anything but the current gen is a waste of money IMO, unless you were really going to go for an inexpensive card. There is no reason to buy a 980ti and not a 1070? it may or may not have been a bad card, if all you tried was reinstalling drivers that really doesn't eliminate much in the way of problem solving. In any case i would just get a 1070 (just dont pay $550 for one)

You make a good point, but If I were to get the 1070 again, I wouldn't want to risk another defective card again, even though it's sold out at the moment. And plus, before when I bought the 1070 about a couple weeks ago, I went ahead and bought some new computer parts as well, to get that "experience". But since I've spent about $600 dollars on the rest of the components, might as well get something right? I appreciate your response!

Looks like it's rumored to launch next two weeks, and that it's faster than the Radeon RX-480 as well. If we're lucky, the potential price could be lower than the rx 480's. But we'll have to wait and see, as for now. I might just wait until the GTX 1070s are back in stock, maybe in a month or two. Appreciate the response!
