Hello! So ive been trying to squeeze out what i can from my fx-8150 and have learnt alot about overclocking and etc in the process. Im by no means an expert, but all in time right? When i bought this processor it was the first 8 core and i thought it seemed pretty close or higher clocks compared to the competition. I knew intel was of course the better performer, but the price difference seemed like a no brainer. Nowdays, i figured overclocking my cpu would bring me up to at least stock speeds of some similarly clocked intel processors. But from what i see now, even boosting this thing up well beyond the stock clocks of some of the intel chip still would leave it slower. And then of course i learnt how these fx chips also double as a space heater lol What am i missing here?

And finally, is intel really worth the huge price difference? (i know, i know... starting back up the great debate). Mainly for gaming (WoW, Forza, etc). I am having fun squeezing out what i can on this chip, but if i am to invest more trying to catch up to modern games i want to find where the money is better spent. This things a money pit as it is lol

The architecture of the amd chips is a bit dated and not as efficient per clock as the newer intel chips.
Most games depend on the performance of a single master thread.
Few can utilize more than 2-3 threads.
Do not be misled by task manager showing activity on all threads, that is just windows distributing activity among all available threads.
In general, the single thread passmark rating of all fx chips is in the 1500 range.
A FX-8 just gives you more threads than a FX6 or FX 4.

Here are some experiments you can do on your system to illustrate this:

Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.

You should also experiment with removing one core. You can do this in the windows msconfig boot advanced options option. You will need to reboot for the change to take effect. Set the number of processors to less than you have.
This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many cores.

On the Intel side, the single thread passmark rating is higher.
The single thread rating is most important in games such as sims, mmo, and strategy games.
The $125 I3-6100 is 2102. In most games, it will do better than a FX-8
The $225 I5-6600K is 2126, but it can easily be overclocked by 30%.

If your games are fast action shooters, the graphics card is most important.

Thank you! I have disabled 2 cores so I have it set up as a 6 core 4.3ghz @ 3.875v vs the stock 3.6ghz. Temps are limiting me from going higher with the small h55 I have but I decided to order a h105 and I should be able to swap that over anyways if I keep the brackets for Intel. Maybe I could manage more performance unless my board becomes the next limit. Which is where the upgrade to Intel starts to seem more worthy of I have to change so much for so little. I've seen improvements in game but still slight glitches on the high setting in Forza 6:apex. I can't seem to figure out how to show fps in this game, it usually comes up on other games with the "riva tuners statistics" program I have. Probably because it's not a full game, more of an intro to PC to make us excited for the full game lol

What do people use to benchmark their systems? I have cpu-z but my single thread only comes out to 940ish so your scores seem different to what mine tests

I guess if anyone is interested, these are my specs. Opinions welcome on what direction you'd go with the build!

-Antec 1100
-AsRock extreme3 mobo (4+1 phase, but I have a fan pulling air from the Vrm heat sinks and etc)
-fx-8150 overclocked so far to 4.3ghz 6 core @3.875v (h55 cooler push/pull, soon to be a h105 instead)
-4x4gb 1600 corsair vengeance set to 1866 (9-10-9-27 2T)
-Gigabyte 7870 oc edition set to 1230mhz core/1375mhz memory @1263mV
-corsair TX750 psu
