How to run a 2nd display with separate desktop, not one extended display (coming from Nvidia to Radeon)

Really need some help here as this is driving me crazy. I use a 2 display setup so that I can run KODI sent to my TV and still use my PC as normal. I was using an old Nvidia GTS450 but the HDMI port fried. My nephew is a gamer and I knew he had a couple extra cards that he had tried out and never got around to selling, so I gave him some $$ for a Sapphire R9 270x. Now I know that this should be and is MUCH more capable hardware than what I had, but I simply cannot figure out how to run the second display and have it actually be a SEPARATE display, with its own desktop area. The way I had it before I could just drag and drop the KODI (or whatever really) window over there. This new ATI crimson software is so user unfriendly - I do not know if the option is there and I simply can't find it, or if ATI cards are not capable of running 2 displays like this. It seems that if I want to use the second display I have to run one looooong desktop area, which makes the setup unusable if I don't want to have the tv on, or if I'm utilizing a different input source on the tv.
I am really hoping I can get some expert input before I decide to dump some more $$ and go back to Nvidia. Many many thanks in advance...

By separate desktop do you mean with its own start menu, clock, etc. Or just a separate display where the PC doesn't count the display as 1 large resolution. If you want to not extend your desktop then depending on what version of windows you are using you can go to settings (windows 10) control panel (xp or vista or 7), then go to display. Where it states multiple displays It may say duplicate desktop, change that to extend displays.

I hope I answered your question in they way you wanted! Good luck!

Yes, "Or just a separate display where the PC doesn't count the display as 1 large resolution" is what I meant. Thank you so much for the control panel pointer. It looks like I might be able to do what I need there. I'm so busy with work I haven't been able to mess around with it yet but I will a bit later and will report back. THANK YOU!!
