Title says it all, I am having a hard time deciding between those two cards. Especially since the 980 Ti is being sold for so cheap on newegg.

If your not going to put a waterblock on the 980ti and OC it with modded firmware I would get the 1070.

980ti: 250W power draw vs 160W for 1070
980ti: 6GB VRAM vs 8GB VRAM for 1070
980ti: 2.5 slower than 1070 in VR
980ti: loses in every benchmark vs 1070

1070 also supports nvidia simultaneous multi projection

the choice is clear

A OCed 980ti is faster then a OCed 1070 as of now. Maybe in the future that may change with Modded firmware to increase the Core voltage on the 1070 but as of now it is not. So it depends on what kind of User he is.

Power Draw: Not a huge concern.
VRAM: I admit that is part is making the 1070 more tempting.
Virtual Reality: I could care less about VR.
Benchmarks: Im not sure about that one because the 980 Ti i stated has a BIG factory overclock (178 mhz) and the 1070 only has a small factory overclock (50) and i cannot find a review of either card.

you can OC 1070 to 2000 MHz easily and maybe even 2100 MHz (I don't recommend going that high)
980ti max OC on water cooling maybe 1480 Mhz

I have no idea why you would buy a 980ti unless you can get it for $300 or less; 980ti uses a lot of power and does run pretty hot

You would have to use Modded firmware and use high fan settings if you don't have a water block.

So if your not comfortable with your OCing skils the 980ti might not be a good fit. In the video he only got 1450mhz Core which is normal but with waterblock people are pulling in around 1550mhz.

a GTX 1070 is a no-brainer when prices are the same, consumes much less power (which you should care about) making it run way cooler and quieter being almost silent under stress which improves the experience a bunch vs. the hot and noisy 980 Ti, 2GB extra vRAM, improved Async compute over maxwell (still emulated in SW but improved), VR specific features (maybe next year or whenever you will use it?), i mean why go for less when you will be paying the same amount of money? a GTX 980 Ti is hot and noisy when overclocked, if you want your entire system to sound like a vacuum cleaner then go for it, unless you are putting it under water, still the 1070 has a better, cooler and more efficient improved chip.

I would pick the card with the better chip over a card with an older chip that has super enthusiast components, factory OCed, a premium cooler etc .... the one with the better chip and standard PCB/Cooler is always better.

Well then i guess i shall choose the 1070, when it comes back in stock. Do you have any idea when the prices for the GTX 1070 will start to drop?

btw if you ran both cards stock 24 hours a day 365 days a year at 15 cents a KWH. The 980ti would cost you 88$ more.
So if you ran your system 4 hours a day 365 days a year at 100% load the 980ti would cost you 14.50$ more. A added cost yes but not a huge factor.

I am in the same situation as you, i had the MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming last year which i hated its heat and noise levels a lot and returned it, was waiting for the 1070, then when it came to market it was crazy overpriced like you know, so i was considering the ASUS ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti, which has super high-end components and costs exactly the same as current 1070 price, but having owned the 980 Ti previously i know better than to buy this hot and noisy power sucker.

I still think the 1070 is way overpriced and will come down by 20% at the first market shake (whenever that happens) so i was considering the RX 480 but it turned out to be a disappointment.

I decided to wait till the end of July for possibly 3 things to happen, non-reference RX 480 to start showing, the release of the GTX 1060 and probably all that will disturb the market enough for the 1070 to come down to its initial MSRP (which will be a 20% reduction of its current selling price) also by this time the 1070 will be available in large quantities which will also push the price down further.

If i would to make an estimation, the GTX 1070 will drop to its MSRP by the end of July or early August, otherwise i will just get an RX 480 or GTX 1060 custom cards and upgrade to a GTX 1080 Ti or Vega next year because i really need a true 4K card!

it's $200 to $250 cheaper than 980ti and better in every way. There is 0% chance the prices will change even 1 year from now. Demand is insane; they cannot keep up the supply at these prices

I don't believe that to be the case, i have seen the price of the 1070 in my market drop from €565 on release to €500 currently in a matter of few weeks, demand is not insane like you claim since cards last a while in stock before being sold out, i see that around the 15th of July there will be plenty of GTX 1070 stock flooding the market, most retailers will have 100+ pieces of every brand and variant of the 1070, by this time plenty of custom RX 480s will be in the market, the 1060 will be out and possibly an RX 490 announcement (after yesterday's AMD slides leak).

I believe all these events will force the 1070 to come down to MSRP because by that time people will have plenty of options to choose from which will ease the demand on the 1070

Of course it is overpriced and thousands are calling it that, maybe not here on tom's but in my top local computer forums people are laughing at the price and in Reddit UK people are going crazy over the price, so it has sure been called overpriced a lot.

Nvidia's announced MSRP for the non-reference was $379 which is near what a GTX x70 card has been selling for in all previous generation, i do not care how much faster or less expensive it is compared to last-gen's top performer, the fact is it is still a mid-range GPU, watch when the RX 480X, RX 490, GTX 1080 Ti, the new Titan and Vega all come to market in few weeks to few months, how the GTX 1070's price/performance will look like by that time, anyone who buys the card at the current price will feel ripped off and that they paid way too much for a mid-range average performer.

It is called an x70 for a reason, it is mid-range compared to what is coming in the next few months and should be priced as a mid-range card in this generation, comparing to previous-gen price/performance is not really meaningful at this point after the massive node-shrink that occurred.

I strongly believe the 1070 will come down to its $379 MSRP ASAP when the hype and craze slow down and people have many other options to choose from which will be very soon!
