So I am new to the PC masterrace and have a new Haswell i5 CPU, Now I have been viewing a lot of videos on youtube, on how to mount a cooler. Some of them say I may apply a little pressure so that the thermal paste flows out evenly. Now can someone tell me is there any chance of damage or bent socket pins if I apply a little pressure? I really dont want to damage anything. Thanks for your help

Solution
If you are using a stock cooler then place it over the coolers 4 leg placements then push down 2 at a time diagonally to insure that it get's spread in an even amount. And yes it is good to apply a bit of pressure. :)

Hope this helped mate have a good one

If you use a Noctua cooler, the 2 mounting screws are Springloaded, so ultimately they equalise and deliver I guess the correct level of pressure to domthe job. Well I did it 2x and got the same acceptable cpu core temps ... So assume all is well.
Like you it was my first time, and yes I admit I Was scared!

Sorry mate I wouldn't know but I think most aftermarket coolers have a solid stand but I honestly wouldn't know.
