My buffalo external hard drive suddenly stopped working on windows 10. It is detected by my system now but is not accessible. Even windows explorer freezes if I plug in the drive

Now, if I plug this in my friend's mac, it is working fine. How should I recover it to use in windows
I have around 500 gb of important data on it which I cannot afford to lose

Hi there somya2018,

There's a chance that the drive is failing.(unresponsive system when drive is attached)
What is the file format of the drive? My suggestion would be to back up the data stored on the drive on your friend's MAC, in order to be sure your data is safe.
After that, you will need to use some data recovery tool for DOS mode, as your system becomes unresponsive when the drive is attached. You can boot up Ubuntu from a flash drive or a CD(just boot up, don't install that) and try to transfer the data. Here's a thread on Ubuntu Live CD: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

Once the data is safe, you can either test the drive with HDD testing tool for DOS mode or attach it to the MAC and test it...
