Hello, I've just built my first PC and I've run into a problem. I'll start from the beginning... I installed Windows 7 64bit from a USB flash drive and everything went fine. During installation, my keyboard and mouse were detected and working fine and continued to work fine after everything was installed.

I then tried to install the Ethernet drivers via USB flash drive but this time, the drive wasn't detected? So I tried an external HDD, same thing, wasn't detected.

The USB flash drive and external HDD both lit up so I knew that the ports are powering them and the devices aren't showing up in the device manager either.

I decided to reset my PC and upon reset none of my devices were detected. My mouse and keyboard aren't even being detected anymore!

I've searched for hours for a solution but nothing seems to work. I've also noticed that when on the desktop if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del the Windows 7 lock menu loads up as it should but if I press num lock or caps etc the keyboard LED doesn't change to show if it's on or off. The keyboard also works fine on the Windows 7 login screen.

I can confirm that all devices are fully functional as I'm using them to type this out and I've also tried using several other mice and keyboards to no avail, how can I fix this? I've posted this question twice on Yahoo Answers but the replies were extremely useless such as "I have the same problem". Please help! I've tried all six USB ports including both 3.0 & 2.0 ports but neither work.

I find it very strange how the mouse & keyboard worked perfectly until I reset the PC. If you require any additional information please just ask and I'll provide it ASAP, I really would like to get this sorted quickly as I've spent £1250 on this PC and haven't had chance to use it yet!

Update: I'm not sure if this will be helpful but here is a list of my parts: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/cq2sJV

Okay, I went into the bios and everything was working inside the bios, the USB stick was detected, the keyboard worked and the mouse worked. Then once Windows had finished booting up the mouse & keyboard worked in Windows but the USB stick wasn't showing under My Computer.

After this, I reset the PC to see if it was fixed and once again the mouse wouldn't work in Windows! It seems that the mouse will work in Windows only if I go into the bios before it boots! How do I fix this? I've never had this issue before with a PC, this all seems very strange.

How do you reset windows?
Do you mean reboot?

Please update your motherboard bios inside bios itself.

Use Intel update utility to install the latest drivers in Windows

Check temperature in bios. How hot is the CPU after about 10 min?

Install Memtest86+ on an USB flash drive and boot from it. You can run it over night, it's going to need some time before it's done.

Have a look at the USB ports . Any contacts bent inside or dust or anything?

Did you install the motherboard inside the case with spacers?

Good to see you try to help, but irrelevent - all of it.

1) Why update the BIOS? USB devices work in the BIOS, so this isn't the problem.

2) Intel update utility does not install all the latest drivers.

3) If the temperature was the problem, the system would shut off from overheating.

4) Memtest? Again, USB ports work in BIOS, not in Windows.

5) Bent pins in the USB ports would either create a short, possibly damaging the whole system or the devices connected in them would not work at all.

Bottom line - find a way to get the driver installers on the hard drive and get them installed if you can get the mouse to work again in the 2.0 ports..

It's a new system. Can't hurt to do all my suggestions. Even if it doesn't help for USB problems in the first place, the system would run more stable which could solve the USB problems. Especially the bios update.

If you think the Intel update utility won't install the latest chipset and USB drivers, could you link them for the TO please? It's not the best utility, but it would install at least the right drivers. The Intel hp is one of the worst places to search for the right and newest drivers, because of that I always suggest this tool first, before manually searching them.

High temperature could result in freezing mouse or keyboard or unpredictable acting.

We will see if the right drivers will help, but it's a very uncommon phenomenon that the mouse and keyboard won't work in all of the USB ports available.

NVIDIA driver installed from NVIDIA.com?

BIOS update are often time for updating processor support and other little issues, and if the keyboard and mouse stop working when it's booted into Windows, it's not a BIOS issue. Besides, with the potential for making things worse, it's best to rule everything else out before a BIOS update.

As for the Intel update utility, I said it wouldn't update ALL drivers.

Gaarsin, make sure you're using the 2.0 ports. The 3.0 ports won't work until the drivers are installed. If you can get onto the desktop again, put in the disc that came with the motherboard and install the chipset and USB drivers.

After I enabled XHCI hand-off in the BIOS all the USB ports stopped working in Windows, so I've just turned it off again.

I've just tried booting in safe mode and the USB drive still wasn't recognized in Windows 7.

The 2.0 & 3.0 ports work fine in the BIOS and I've tried the 2.0 & 3.0 ports multiple times. I can't install the drivers from the motherboard disc as I don't have a DVD drive.
