i would wait a bit and grab a 1070 when the price lowers, really there is no such thing as overkill anymore no matter what the res(unless your running games at 480 lol) because sooner or later, theres going to be games where you need to drop settings to be able to keep a steady frame rate.
That will depend on the rest of your system, your monitor's resolution, your desired frame rate, and your PSU make/model. Although, the last thing may be a moot point. The 1070 and the 260 are about equal when it comes to wattage.
Thanks for the answer! I actually did a generational upgrade for everything so I'll be running on a Z170 Pro Gaming, i7-6700k, 16GB RAM. PSU on my old system finally died (after 7 years lol) which forced me out of inaction. New PSU is a Seasonic 650W I believe. I won't be gaming in 1440p or higher any time soon though and I've heard the GTX 1080 is overkill for 1080p gaming!
Wait and see what the 1060 has to offer, I believe it is being released on July 9th?
See how well it performs and if it suits your budget since you will not be gaming at high resolutions like you said. The 1080 would be overkill for 1080p res.

+1^
Go with your budget as best you can. I run a GTX 980 on 1080p. Always nice to have some performance in reserve as games get more graphically demanding. And if you are interested in VR...
