I have 2 VGA monitors that I was hoping to use for my home office set up. For example, I would like to have email open on one monitor and be working on a spreadsheet on the second monitor. The docking station for my laptop has 1 VGA port and a DVI-D dual link port. If I get a DVI-D Dual Link 24+1 male to VGA female M/F Video Cable Adapter will this work?

Solution

Cable no! Adapter if not active, wont do the job either.
If your DVI port don't have the 4 small pins

Analog ones ( C1 - C4 ), you need to get an active converter to be able to transfer signal to VGA.
You will need something like this...

It will work, I used to have the same setup and I had no problems with it because it does not matter which ports you connect the monitors to, as long as they are connected to the same computer.

Also have in mind that most of em support up to 1920x1200 video resolution and you may have problems at resolutions that aren't 16:9, depends on convertor.

You can use also something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812400402
Using same one just HDMI => VGA
