Hello,

Not a Techie so even popping in a new Graphics card is a minor terror, ever since when I was a kid I popped in mis-matching Frequency RAM into a Compaq, and caused an electrical short with the accompanying burning smell. I'm an architect so I do a lot of drafting and 3d modeling, as well as gaming. I appreciate your 2 cents on 2 Questions, but if you think of something else let me know!

I have:

Win7
i7-3820
Asus-P9X79 Motherboard
16 GB 2133mhz RAM
NVDA gtx 670
240 GB SSD bootdrive, 1 TB Storage Drive
Corsair 850M battery (I know, right?)

1) I want to Upgrade to a gtx1070 for games and improved graphics processing- any conflicts with my MB or hardware? Any anticipated bottlenecks? I think I might leap-frog equipment: new Graphics now, new CPU/Computer in a couple more years. I'm really, really happy with the historical performance of my current set up, and would love to squeeze as much as I can outta this 3820. I'm also really excited about VR, and might get a Rift or something one day.

2) I'm terrified of upgrading my Operating system to Win10 - WIndows 8 scared the HELL out of me: I tried to help a friend's grandma learn how to use it, and when I sat down to teach her, I was equally as helpless and frustrated as she was. NEED a file-structure organised in a conventional way, accessible in a conventional way, not short cuts to apps and fancy tiles- I have work to do. Please tell me windows 10 has fixed all this, and that, aside from some new Glitz, its like Win 7?

many thanks,
Andrew

Solution
You still have a really competent CPU for what you do. Upgrading to the GTX 1070 should be painless and a significant improvement in your gaming, no conflicts. As far as Windows 10 goes, it "looks" very similar to 7. There are things some people don't like, such as the forced updates and privacy concerns, but the learning curve in navigating it isn't too steep.

You are absolutely correct with your approach on the upgrade path.
the GTX 1070 will feel at home in your system.
the 850m battery is not a battery since it does not hold a charge. it is called Power Supply Unit (PSU).
About Winodows 10, just click the upgrade button. 8 was awful , 10 is more convenient. and you don't have much time left for the free upgrade.

thanks for looking it over. Yeah the Privacy thing actually does bother me- and unnecessary updates bricked a google tablet of mine once... but we'll see. Do you think it's a 'necessary' thing to do? Like, will VR games require Win 10?

I popped open the case to look at the MB and saw my 670 has (2) 6 pins - ha, that 850 looks even sillier moving forward... :p

thanks again - to both of y'all.

*sigh* I guess I might accept MSFT's little deadline-ultimatum, if the games moving forward will require it. (And, since we're at the beginning of the VR revolution, we have allot of 'moving forward' to do. )

I don't see any spare 8-pins laying around in the case, but I hard I can get a (2)6pin-to(1)8pin dongle
