Is the 1070 worth it? (UK)

I've been considering upgrading my current GTX 770 and was originally looking to get the 1070 but I wasn't expecting it to cost upwards of £400 and I'm not sure that it's worth it.

Will the 1070 decrease in price over the next few months? Or should I just consider thr RX 480?

Cheers!

Solution
It depends on your resolution and frequency:

1080p@60Hz => RX 480
1080p@144Hz & 1440p 60Hz => GTX 1070
1440pp@144Hz & 4k => 2 x GTX 1070 in SLI

The 1070 will probably decrease in price in october when AMD releases Vega. Until then, maybe, but not significantly.

Solution
GTX1070 price goes quite a lot over the planned price in Europe. It is about €100 more expensive (€500 custom) than it should (€400 custom).
It is at the moment mainly due to higher demand than available stock.
It is not only expensive, it is also quite hard to get.
The situation should stabilize in the next few months.

I currently have a 144HZ 1080p monitor but I also might consider 1440p in the future. The 1070 is clearly the better option, but the price is off-putting.

Yes. 1070 without a doubt. Wait a month or two for the market to get saturated and the prices to come down. Maybe it will be a significant drop like guanyu210379 said, but we europeans do get f***ed on this stuff usually, so, AMD's release of Vega in octovber would be a safer bet. Investing in a less powerfull card would be a bad idea in your situation.

I wouldn't do that as older Nvidia GPUs underperform in DX12 games. This is architecture related and has been fixed in the new generation. So as games move to DX12 the perfromance advantage of the 1070 will only increase. Plus, for 1440p, the extra 2 gigs of VRAM may start to come in handy at some point when the computing power of the GPU is still valid.

I'm not sure about the European market but I do not think the prices will drop that much in the US once Vega is released. The prices may come down because there is more stock and less demand but I can only see a large price drop if one condition is met: if Vega performs directly between the 1070 and 1080.

In regards to the OP, I believe a 1070 is definitely worth it for 1440p 60Hz gaming or 1080p 144Hz gaming. Price is all relative to who you are talking to, some people have no problem spending 400 - 500 USD for the 1070 as seen by the current supply and demand while others would not even consider it unless it drops to 380 USD. The lowest priced 1070s are from eVGA and Gigabyte:

These prices do not seem unfair to me, 400 - 425 is right in line with a new 980 Ti (similar performance).

Getting similar performance for a similar price on a new generation of GPUs IS unfair ;)

Getting a 1080 Ti at the former price of the 980 Ti would be what's fair.

Yeah, but running the same game in DX11 on a 980ti would perform even worse than running it in DX12 because of teh performance improvements it brings, so that would actually widen the gap when compared to 1070 on DX12 :)

But when the 980 Ti was released it was 650 USD so that is why I am personally okay paying 450 USD for similar performance. 200 less USD and 100 - 125 less TDP is a great generational step and well worth it in my opinion. Unfortunately, I do not think the 1080 Ti will be 650 USD at release, I predict closer to 800 USD unless they prices truly do drop to MSRP.

450 US yeah, sure. 400+ pounds, no, not really. Like i said, we have it bad over here in Europe with this stuff. Well, atleast I don't leave down under :)))
