Bought used Canon PowerShot A540. Put in new SD card (2GB). It says "memory card error". I reset to original settings. On the menu where you should be able to reformat the SD card it is greyed out. Am I out of luck or is there something new I could try?

Is your SD card a SDHC card? If so, it won't work with that camera. You need a regular SD card. See this link:
