Looking at
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.html

Two equal comparisons based on that website.
Compare CPU's. AMD I can get FX6350 with 14MB for $160 but Intel i3 6100 is at 4MB for $165. or i3 4160 with 3MB cache for the same price. I dont care about integrated graphics.

I have read all the AMD vs Intel threads here on Tomshardware.

I can not find anything on this except for an outdated Tomshardware article.

What is cache good for?

Well maybe not ALL, just the few that popped up on the search.
I think Intel is better then AMD anyways, from what I've read.
I dont really know what 3MB over 6MB cache would be good for though. Maybe its nothing, maybe its something.
Its all very confusing sometimes. Just bite the bullet and assume the best bang for the buck is what I am getting.

To answer your question A CPU cache is a hardware cache used by the central processing unit (CPU) of a computer to reduce the average cost (time or energy) to access data from the main memory. The cache is a smaller, faster memory which stores copies of the data from frequently used main memory locations.

So in simple terms it remembers where commonly used information is so it can access and process it quicker, the higher the Cache the more of this information it can store.

I also fully agree with RGD1101 on going for the I3-6100 over the FX-6350, in Benchmarks the I3 scores above or on par with the FX even when the FX gets to use its higher core count.
