Is the i5-4690k still good?

I'm building a new computer right now and I'm still wondering if I should get the i5-4690k for a gaming build. Is that a good idea, or should I try getting something else?

It's still good and likely will be for another few years. The i5 6600k is the newest i5 though.

Nope, there aren't really year caps on hardware. Some people upgrade in 2yrs, 4yrs, 6yrs. I suppose if the os changes so much that it no longer has compatible drivers and software that support the motherboard it would eventually become obsolete, otherwise it's based on performance and how well it's doing what you need it to. Some people will happily run an i3 for years and others will be looking to upgrade their i5 to an i7 in a year if their needs change.
