Very unstable GPU usage causes lag in games.

i got myself an asus R9 290X and in some games (mostly GTAV and WATCHDOGS) my GPU load isnt consistent and is causing me to get frame drops in games. ive lowered settings in every game and limited framerates to 50 and 40FPS and same issue. i have had the gpu overclocked and onderclocked and still the same issue and im out of ideas at this point. does anybody have any idea as to why this is happening?

What version of the 290x do you have? Is it the reference design? The first thing that comes to mind is thermal throttling. Try playing a game and monitor your temps. If they exceed a certain value the card would throttle its performance as a fail safe measure.

I have the asus matrix platinum, temps peak about 80°c overclocked. Everythig in my system checks out temperature wise.

is there any appication to measure average GPU power draw? ive used a power meter when gaming on my pc and i pulled a peak wattage of 520w.

a bit of an update, i got myself a 750W PSU today (thermaltake smart 750W) and the problem continued, until i closed asus GPU tweak then it all went away, once i reopened it again it started. now im stuck with no overclocking and lag or no overclocking and no stutter
