I am currently using an AMD FX-4300, I get decent fps on most games but however some very graphic intensive games like Battlefield and Arma 3 I drop to basically uplayable at 10 fps. I was wondering that if I upgrade my CPU to a FX-8350, would it increase my FPS drastically or would I also need to upgrade my motherboard as well?

Ok first of all, I see your money is tight so we shouldn't be telling him to wait for zen or go intel. We also aren't building him a beast computer, we are making his computer do what he wants which is gaming. Battlefield 4 at higher settings very much likes more multi threading performance, I know his gpu is fine for now. He just needs a cpu for cheap. I would go with a fx 8350 to be under his $200 budget. Make sure you have 8gb of ram at minimum.

Summary:

Q: "I was wondering that if I upgrade my CPU to a FX-8350, would it increase my FPS drastically"
Answer: Yes, this is likely why that 280x that should play bf4 just fine is struggling.

Q: "would I also need to upgrade my motherboard as well"
Answer: No, as long as you bio's...

Upgrading your CPU will get you more FPS in CPU intensive gaes such as Arma. Battlefield is more of a GPU hog than a CPU hog though so I'd can't explain the low FPS in Battlefield. You haven't listed your motherboard so we can't comment on whether it's worth the upgrade or not. Also unless your overclocking your CPU then you probably don't need to upgrade your mobo. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that Zen is "expected" to be released at the end of this year and if it lives up to the hype, then you'll feel a bit gutted that your bought a new CPU and it is slow compared to the new Zen chips.

Could you list your entire pc specifications? Graphics cards are the most important component in a gaming pc, your processor come second and your motherboard doesn't really matter if you dont want to overclock. What is your budget for your pc upgrade? What resolution are you playing at?

The Graphics card I have right now is the R9 280x Sapphire Toxic Edition.

Probably at around 200

$200 is pretty low for your budget maybe if you sell your gpu and cpu you can get some extra cash out of that. I recommend not upgrading your cpu. it would be better to wait for Zen or go intel which will be pretty expensive. It would be best to wait for aftermarket RX 480 models or GTX 1060. Any lower upgrade would either be insignificant or a waste of money.

Answer: No, as long as you bio's supports an 8350, which I'm sure it does. Don't plan on overclocking.
