Moving HDD partition to an SSD

I currently have a 2tb internal HDD which has 2 partitions. One partition is my C drive with 149gb of space. The other D drive is well, the rest. Both of these drives are technically the same 2tb one; I just have the computer recognizing them as two different ones. My question is, how do I move the C drive partition to a completely other drive, an SSD. I would like to get rid of the two partitions on the 2tb drive, then move the smaller C one to the SSD. Preferably making the SSD into my primary C drive and the 2tb one staying as the D drive.

If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!

The basic partition-cloning process outlined by Boogieman is correct, however, with one important exception. There doesn't seem to be any reason why you would need to delete/format the D: partition on your 2 TB HDD.

A number of disk-cloning programs, e.g., Macrium Reflect, will allow you to clone the C: partition on the HDD over to the SSD, assuming the disk-space capacity of the SSD is sufficient to contain the partition's contents.

So you wouldn't have to make any changes in the HDD's D: partition as a consequence of this d-c operation. All (or virtually all) your programs & data on that disk should be available without any problems after the C: partition data is successfully cloned over to the SSD.

As Boogieman indicated, after...
Hey there, AzoraFred.

Well, you can try finding a cloning/migration tool which is capable of cloning a single partition and not the whole drive. Or you can simply backup all the data you have on your D: volume, delete the partition and clone the drive over to the SSD. This way it will be small enough for the SSD you intend to get (unless it's 128GB).

Once the cloning process is completed, you should check if you can boot with the SSD alone, just to make sure that everything was successful. After that go ahead and reformat the HDD and put any data you may need back to it.

You could also check out this tutorial on how to migrate to an SSD: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows. Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks! Still needs some more in depth stuff for my current situation! Hopefully this will work though!

As Boogieman indicated, after you clone the C: partition to the SSD, disconnect the 2 TB HDD from the system and boot to the SSD to ensure it boots & functions without problems. Then you can reconnect the HDD to the system and undertake any changes in the data on that disk that you care to make, including deleting the OS by & by.

Thanks so much! The SSD should be arriving soon and I will keep you guys posted on the progress.
