Hi guys, I recently acquired a new msi version of the new nvidia geforce gtx 1080 gpu's, upgrading from my previous gtx 980, and I have found an almost negligible performance difference in all sorts of games at 5 to 10 frames of difference when the 1080 claimed to be twice as powerful as the last gen of graphics cards. It might be that there are not many drivers for the 1080 yet, but I'm not quite convinced of that. One thing that I have noticed, however, is that, while keeping nightmare benchmarking on while playing DOOM, my cpu is constantly getting a 100-90% workload on all cores. I'd like to hear what people think and what CPU/MOBO I should consider Purchasing for single GPU high framerate gaming in games like DOOM, Witcher 3, and GTA V. Thanks. Also $550 budget if you have suggestions.

Here are my specs:
GPU: nvidia geforce gtx 1080 ARMOR 8GB VRAM
CPU: intel i5 3570k 4 core @ 3.4Ghz
MOBO: ASRock Z77 Extreme 4
PSU: Corsair CX750
RAM: 2 sticks 4GB (w) 1600mhz
HDD: 1TB storage 7200rpm
SDD: 256GB Samsung 850 pro (w) OS Windows 10
Display: Dell Gsync 144hz 2k monitor

Update: Uningine Valley benchmark score of 2527 with average of 60 fps, from what I've seen, the average benchmark with 1080s is around 90fps. There's definitely something wrong. My cpu is also 5 years old, maybe it's worn out? Also, the Displayport cable I've been using has been having problems with flashing on the monitor recently, maybe it's broken and effecting the framerate so drastically and I need to buy a new one?

Update: my bad, the average gpu is 60 fps for the benchmark, at 2k resolutions, 90 at hd, still, I have noticed little to no improvement in games' framerates since I upgraded, maybe it is because of optimization or drivers?

Try to run a GPU benchmark (e.g. Unigine Valley) and compare your score with other people.

Assuming you are dealing with a bottleneck, you could either try CPU overclocking or go straight for an upgrade.
