So I bought a USB 3.0 to SATA adapter to try to get some pics and videos off my old laptop drive from another computer. But when I tried to copy and paste to my desktop, the transfer stopped at 4%.

Is it because the old hard drive is Windows 8.1, and my computer is the upgraded Windows 10 from 8.1?

I am so frustrated cause it's also been slowing down my computer.

I did change permissions, and I can see the pictures, but earlier it wouldn't show all the pics, just the generic blue mountain background.

I also didn't click on the first dialog box that pops up the first time I clicked on the username I wanted to get the files from.

Please help.

Solution
Did you actually take ownership of the old drive when you connected it to the windows 10 system letsclique
So it gave permissions to access all contents of the drive.?

I was able to copy and paste some of the pics into new folders on my desktop. But that same day, some of the folders showed that they were empty, but later the files were there. I was worried I would never get those pictures back, but there they were.

I also tried to copy and paste to a flash drive, but I think the transfers would just stop.

I changed the permissions so that I could access all the files, and folders, like desktop, pictures, etc.

Could I have messed up somewhere when changing the permissions?

Is there a way to change ownership back to the previous user name? Anyway to start over again, and do it the right way to where that dialog box pops up that says something about "click continue to have permanent access to these files" in other words?
