How do I find out if my motherboard is compatible?

Hello!

I'm currently trying to help my brother who knows absolutely nothing of computers, who's already purchased and received a GTX 1070. We've yet to open the package, as I'd like to find out if his motherboard is actually compatible.

His motherboard is a MSI H110M PRO-VH with the dimensions: 23.5 cm x 18.9 cm

I'm unable to decide for myself if it could fit, and would really appreciate some input, so that we don't just open the package to find out that it doesn't fit, and that the warranty has been voided.

Solution
Motherboard will be fine.

What's the power supply make & model.
AND, make sure the case can physically fit the 1070.

If you tick both of those boxes you'll be fine.

Thank you for your answer, I already know that his power supply is not going to cut it, as it's only enough for the GPU alone. I've already told him to get a new power supply.

That being said, is there anything he should look out for while finding a new power supply?

You do not void the warranty if you open the package (box) of a GPU or CPU or M/B etc.YOu are suposed to and expected to do so. You void it if you start to removefor example screws you are not suposed to.

Now for the M/B is totaly fine to plug the GPU you have. You do not worry about the dimensions of the M/B but the dimensions of your computer's tower case.

A trick you may try is to place your GPU on a A4 blank paper and draw with a pen or pencil its trace around the card, cut it with scissors and then try to fit the paper card copy you just made inside the case to see how it goes. Bear in mind that the real card is a little smaller by some millimiters. If you have a meter or something similar use it to measure the space your card is suposed to be inside the case.

That's actually quite a good tip, the one with the A4 paper!

Now, as I have said a little further up, and not part of the OP, is there anything my brother should look out for, while attempting to purchase a new power supply?

The minimum power supply neened for a GTX 1070 is one with 500W maximum output. On my system i installed 6 months ago a 550W in order to be ready to accept the new Pascal GPUs from nVidia. Before I had a 750W, that was overpowered for my current power consumption needs. Ofcourse go for a modular one. Do not buy by any means a cheap one. And all that if your brother is indeed in a need for a new PSU.
