Want to turn Old Desktop into Connection Server

I couldn't think of a great title but Ill explain my idea thoroughly. I live with a group of people who all have Desktop Pc's and we've used all the Ethernet Connections on the modem. I want to use this old desktop as a sort of connection hub where they all Ethernet to the desktop and have internet connection through that desktop while it would be connected to the internet via ethernet. I essentially want a networking server to provide internet to who ever connects to the Pc. If there is anyway to do that, or any ideas on how to, Id like to hear them.

I know this thread is a couple weeks old now, none the less:

Your modem might be a modem or a modem/router which makes thing different.
A modem will only have 1 Ethernet port on it and will not provide DHCP addressing, NAT or other router functions. For this you need to get a router.

If your modem has more then 1 Ethernet port then it is a modem/router combo and you all you need is a simple 8 port switch (gigabit ones are less then$20).

You would need an advanced setup of phSense and a quality high end Ethernet card in the desktop PC to run at even the efficiency of a cheap router/switch. At the end of the day, using the dedicated networking hardware is far cheaper and easier for your needs.
