75Mb/s speed test, 900KB/s actual download. What is going on?!?!

Hi guys,
the past few days my internet has been really sluggish. I tried running the speed test on Ookla and this is the results:

I download games in steam at about 9MB/s which is roughly the same as the speed test results.

I don't notice much lag in games.

However, I tried to download files in my browser and it starts at about 4MB/s but then drops to 900KB/s. Browsing in general seems extremely slow and youtube takes forever to load a 144p video.

I have tried:
Different browser
Ran malwarebytes
Ran Webroot (antivirus program)
Change DNS from automatic to googles server

Non of this helped, also my laptop is also feeling very slow. Both are connected to the same router, the Desktop is through ethernet and the laptop through wireless.

Why am I experiencing this? and how do I fix it?

Thanks.

Tried disabling AV software, but page loading is still slow and download speed is the same.

on a side note, it seems sometimes (rarely) pages load instantly like they should, but this appears completely random.

Try a few alternatives to Ookla and compare. Sometimes they take different paths. Could be a problem on one or more of the routers it is taking to get out into the world.

A problem I had some years ago was intermittent upload speed while download was constant. It made the internet seem unresponsive, but it would play catchup and take inputs as a batch. Had to have the ISP take care of that one out on line somewhere.

Doesn't appear to have any extra NICs.

That is exactly my point. When did you notice this issue? It could be one of those Windows updates causing the problem.

A bit extreme, but a BIOS update may be needed. Before you do that though, you might try a wireless USB NIC or a plug in card to see if it is only that component causing the issue.

I just did a bit more testing, it actually IS other computers on the same network also having the issue, its just that they start at a high download speed and stay there for a bit longer than then dip to 100KB/s.

Im going to try to re-install chrome and get rid of some plugins to see if that helps tomorrow.

Ok I have no idea what to do any more.

it seems all browsers have the same very slow download and browsing speed.

I feel like if I call my ISP I will just spend hours being told to turn it off and on again and not make any actual progress.

Welcome to the world of ISPs. Deal with it until they are willing to send a tech out. All likelihood the first tech won't solve the problem either, as they will send their less experienced people out first. (unless they manage to identify the problem before sending a tech)
