Ok so a family member wants a computer to work from home with occasionally and asked me to help them. They want something that is CHEAP and will work for what they need.

I have never used autocad/have no idea what it requires. I do however have a "PC Grave Yard" in my closet that has a pc with the following specs:

Core i3 4160
8GB DDR3
1TB Hard Drive

I also have two spare GPUs in that closet. One is an AMD 7770 and the other is an AMD 7750. I think this person does a job where they look at schematics and place fire safety equipment where its supposed to go. (sprinklers, alarms, ect) I have no idea what kind of processing is required for this but I could basically give them this pc for free (I only need to get a windows key for it since I cannibalized it for something else).

Anybody with AutoCad experience:
Would this computer work for this need? Does it need the GPUs in it? Thanks for any insights anyone can provide!

2D autocad really only requires strong single core performance. 3D autocad (think Inventor by Audodesk) will make use of strong single core performance and DirectX11 graphics cards. (Yes directX, AKA use a GAMING card).

I think that your build will do just fine, especially because it is not costing them anything.

The last AudoCad / Inventor PC I built rocked a 4690k i5 at 4.2ghz. Single core performance was what I was after.

Thanks for the answer firefoxx04. I will check and see if the 7770 is compatible with that software and if it is I'll put it in that pc. Should speed up any 3d rendering if they do that. I was worried about the i3 but it sounds like it should be fine.
