Looking for advice on building a new gaming rig. I would like to future-proof the build, yet don't need the best in all areas. I've done a fair amount of research and have also built several systems over the years, yet nothing in the past 5 years, and I'm a bit confused in several areas.
Questions:

Motherboard: I've read up on chipsets and like the Z170. I also like the Intel I7-6700K (LGA 1151). I'm planning on using several USB devices (Keyboard, Mouse, Printer, Plug in my Smartphone), so I will require several USB ports. Would like to keep current with USB 3.1 Type A and C, if possible. However, I find it somewhat confusing in regards to choosing a MB and would appreciate forum member thoughts. I'm not tied to any specific brands, yet will say I've had excellent results with ASUS in the past, yet have no idea about which manufactures are leading. If you wouldn't mind, please read through the questions and provide your thoughts.

CPU: I7-6700K 4.0 or I5-6600K?

SSD: I have little idea about why I would want to use M.2 vs. a 2.5-inch SATA III 6Gb/s SSD. Seems the M.2 also come in PCIe NVMe and SATA III - Yeah, I'm a bit lost here. Also, do people run a single SSD for their system or multiple? I'm thinking about having an SSD for the OS and Games and a large storage disk for pictures, videos, etc.

Memory configuration: I would like to have a total of 16GB of DDR4 DRAM - Seems most of the boards have 4 memory slots, so what are your thoughts on which slots to populate and memory size per stick for optimal performance? Do I need to populate all four slots, or just two, etc?

GPU: I'm thinking about just running a single GTX 1070, which is a double-wide card and should be looking for a PCIE 3.0 compliant MB with room for a dual-width x16 graphics slot. Tom's motherboard guide states to make sure the MB will have room for the card width (not blocking other slots).

CPU Cooler: I've watched a few videos, yet I'm confused about where to mount it with the fans - Top, Bottom, or front of the case. What not to do, etc. I'm sure the case matters as well, so suggestions are welcome. I'm not afraid of cool cases. ;-)

I like the idea of using the following, which I hope makes it easier to answer my questions:
CPU: I7-6700K 4.0 GHz (LGA 1151) or i5
CPU Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 or Corsair Hydro Series H115i
Chipset: Z170
Motherboard: Thinking ATX or E-ATX form factor.
SSD: ? 2.5-inch SATA III 6Gb/s or M2 (PCIe NVMe or SATA III)? Samsung 850 EVO?
OS: Win10 64
GPU: Single GTX 1070
Memory: Looking for 16GB of DDR4
Case: ATX case with room for NZXT Kraken X61 or Corsair Hydro Series H115i CPU cooler.

Thanks for your help.

For gaming the 6600K will keep you very happy, for mobo I'd look at the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming or up it to the Hero (mine in sig), DRAM I'd go 2x8GB (for dual Channel mode) in 2800, 3000 or 3200, and would suggest the GSkill Trident Z or Ripjaws V, the 1070 is a good choice look to EVGA or the Asus Strix, Cooler a Hyper 212 EZVO or the Cryorig H7 would be good reasonably priced picks or could up, but I've had both on my rig and they do very well up through about 4.6/7

If that fits your budget it'll be hard to go wrong. If that's a bit steep for you, downgrade to 6600k first, 1070 second, slightly cheaper cpu cooler third. What you've mentioned will shred anything, but at 1440p 60hz the downgrades I mentioned will perform nearly identical

if you can afford the i7 then go for it. i do recommend asus for mobo. multiple channel mem is always better. as for the ssd, only real advantage to m.2 is seen when plugged into pci. otherwise its comparable to reg ssd.
