Hi folks,

In need of some help, again. So this issue as been driving me around the bend and back again. I recently completed a new build (details below) and have since had nothing but issues in relation to two identical hard drives I'd used in a previous system. Here is my build as I want to know if it might be being caused by another factor:

Fractal Define R4 Case:
Asus Z170-A Motherboard.
16GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX Ram.
Corsair AX760 PSU.
I5 6600K (overclocked to 4.5)
GTX 1070.
Windows 10.

As for hard drives:
1x Samsung SSD (for Operating System).
1x 2TB Harddrive (only runs at 5400rpm so only used for storage).
1x Western Digital 1TB WD2500KS.

Now the hard drive(s) I'm having issues with are the Western Digitals from my previous build. They worked perfectly fine for many years in my old system and have only been playing up in this new build. First of all one of the WD HDD's may actually be broken internally, for it powers on but is not able to be recognised by the BIOS/Windows or anything and does appear to make a weird clicking sound that I'd never heard before from the drives. The other Hard drive appears to work erratically, sometimes it's on and working like a dream and other times when I load Windows up it totally disappears, even when I venture into Disk Management. I've even at to take out the Sata power connector and replug it for it to start up and work again.

Thing is when I have it connected and working fine and checked the health of the hard drive it states that the HDD is perfectly healthy, which only adds to my confusion. Now I did wonder if it was related to an issue with the BIOS (maybe I'd missed something) but can't see anything noticeable. I've changed sata cables, changes power connectors, changed and adjusted the fittings for the motherboard sata connectors. Everything I can think of. At this point I need help.

So do I just have a dying hard drive or is there more to it? I am best just getting a new hard drive? I would use the 2TB drive but I've noticed some issues in a few games and wonder if the 5400rpm might be affecting performance. Sorry for this being so long but thank you in advanced for reading this.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that it's strange that if Windows doesn't recognise the hard drive in question, if I unplug the power sata cable and replug it, Windows eventually recognises it again. It's almost like the hard drive doesn't power up properly. Have tried other power cables to.

Hi there MachoFantastico,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(

I want to start with the clicking one. So, clicking in HDDs, could indicate some mechanical flaw. There's no way you can fix that. If the drive is under warranty, you can contact the place you got it from or WD's Support and eventually RMA it. In case there is some data stored on it, you will need to look for some professional help. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=8Ixo7Y
I believe it will not hurt to attach the drive with different cables to another port.(which you have most probably tried)

You have 2 x 1 TB WD drives right?
As for the other one, I would have guessed that it is some sort...

As for the other one, I would have guessed that it is some sort of a connection issue. Yet, you've mentioned that the problem persists, even after the drive is attached with different cables. Have you attached it to another SATA port?
In that case, I believe you can go to your MOBO's website and update your drivers.
How did you check the drive's health status? You can use WD's DLG tool, both short and extended tests: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=PfsOse

Yeah, 5400 could affect loading times and some in game texture loading let's say. So, for a gaming drive, it would be better to get a 7200 RPM one.

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Hello D_Know_WD, awesome to get a response from an official WD Representative.

I did the test with Data Lifeguard and the program states that all drives have passed with green ticks. That said I still feel like something is wrong with this drive and don't believe its been an issue with the sata cables like I've thought for a while now. Troubleshooting it down, I'm fairly certain its something to do with the fact that the drive can't power on without having to disconnect the power connector than reconnecting it. Which basically results in me having my case open, loading up windows to find windows not recognising the drive until I unplug and replug the power cable which seems to lock up windows, I restart my PC and suddenly the driver is recognised.

Definitely feel its a hardware issue, I have updated my drivers via Asus website but its changed nothing. At this point I'm leaning towards getting a new hard drive. Just have a strong hint this ones on its way out to.

Thanks for helping me out with this. Appreciated.

Just wanted to give an update. Ended up purchasing a new hard drive and thanks to Prime Now it's now fitted and working perfectly. If I at to guess I'd say there was some form of hardware issue with the WD drive itself and having had the other one fail on me I guess I shouldn't be shocked that this went to as they were identical and bought at the same time. Still, it sucks. With that said, thanks for the help.

Well, yeah. Taking into account all the things you've tried, I guess the drive some hardware issue.
I believe you've had this drive for quite some time right? It's good that you got a new one. I believe you should notice some performance difference with newer generation HDDs.

Just one last thing, you've written 1TB HDD, while WD2500KS corresponds to a 250 GB drive. :)

Cheers,
D_Know_WD :)
