Hello all

I require a little help, I have just built my first gaming PC and I've spent quite a few pounds on getting a good spec (I hope) and I'm still getting lag and in game seems very jumpy. I can get 60 fps and then it will drop to 40 fps and straight back up to 60 fps again. Very annoying, its just not smooth at all.

My specs below..,

Windows 10 64-bit
AMD FX-8350
Cooler Master RR-212X-17PK-R1 Hyper 212X "CPU Air Cooler
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 RAM @799MHz
MSI 990FXA Gaming motherboard
MSI NVIDIA GTX 1070
PSU EVGA 780W

I've tried everything I can think of, updating drivers for the GTX 1070 and MSI 990FX. Updating the motherboard bios. Using MSI software to overclock (slightly).

Before I had this PC and had an off the shelf Curry Hp, and I put a GTX 750 in it and if I'm honest its running better than my current PC. Games have gone from saying auto graphics high to auto graphics medium. I though my PC would kick butt!

Can someone please help, I must have missed something.

Many thanks, and I would really appreciate the help.

Jonathan,

Hello, many thanks for you response.

I've been monitoring the CPU usage with msi afterburn and at times its very up and down in game, shouldn't the trend be more flatline?

Oh, I did wonder if the RAM was a little dated, would this make a difference? I'm not sure if the mobo supports DDR4. I really don't want to buy a new processor as the FX-8350 cost me £128.

I guess something is wrong or it would be running as smooth as a nut.

The fx chips always lagged behind the i5/i7 IN GENERAL. Certainly with the gtx 1070/1080 the fx probably can't cut it anymore. 128£ is nothing compared to what that 1070 cost you. As a result you have an average mobo/ram/cpu with high end gpu. And that's why you are seeing the issue- lack of balance.

Only option is to overclock the cpu as far as you can to help.

We have all been there! It's tough to get a truly balanced build.

Thank you all for your advice - I guess I'll put this down to experience (and maybe ask you experts before going ahead and building a gaming PC)

Really appreciate all of your responses :)
