Currently have a an amd fx - 4130 and want to upgrade a little without breaking the small back I have. I'm looking at a fx 6300. Was going to upgrade the cpu first open to suggestions as to what might be better money spent

Current specs are

AMD FX-4130
msi 760gma-p34 main board
Msi GeForce gtx-750ti oc
8gb ddr3 1600mhz
450watt psu
1 tb hard drive

Only game I currently play is warcraft I just got the 750ti today and have had a chance to try it out.

Solution
I wouldn't bother. You only gain two more cores, and the clock speed on the 6300 is lower so it's a trade off. If this is a gaming PC, most games wont use more than 4 cores anyway.

My 2 cents - save your money and build a new system in a year or so. Upgrading your current one just isn't worth it.

Any money you sink into that dead platform is money thrown away. You'd best hold off until you can get an intel build.

This would be the min(still tons better than a 6300):
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor ($110.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: *Asus H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($51.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: *Crucial 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($28.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $191.96
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
*Lowest price parts chosen from parametric criteria

Dropping $100 on a 6300 is not worth it. The "newest" chipset for the fx line is 4 years old.
Saving up a little more and going skylake is the significantly better way to go. Even an i3 will be much better then a fx-6300.

I understand that when you are young you don't have much money but want that upgrade now; but you need to look at it like a short term investment. Buying a 6300 at this point is just wasting more good money, while buying into a better platform will give you a much better foundation to upgrade on in the future.

Now one thing you will need to know is that you will need to completely reinstall windows when switching from AMD to Intel (or vice versa).
Also, yoru license key is tied to your motherboard (unless you deliberately paid more for the retail version of windows instead of the OEM/System Builders) so there is no guarantee that Microsoft will allow you to transfer license to the new board and you may need to purchase a new license.

Thanks for the info. I'm only playing warcraft on my pc I have Xbox for everything else. I used to be real big into building pcs years ago but when I quit wow 4 years ago I got out of the pc game I just bought this current system last year when I came back to wow didn't realize the tech was that old.

Maybe I'll invest in a SSD instead

An SSD for your OS is a great idea. It will make your PC feel "new" again, and it's a relatively inexpensive upgrade.

AMD should be releasing their new CPU's later this year or early next year, so things can change. To answer your question though, Intel CPU's are superior, but AMD is more affordable.

AMD is not more affordable. Everything above $100 per CPU and intel has a better proposition for the same cash.
OP, yes, AMD are really that far behind. Let's hope Zen changes that as it's very much needed by both industry and consumers.

I never said that AMD had better price-to-performance, simply that they are currently more affordable.
