Simple tech external hard drive; lost everything! No explanation, just gone! Is there a way to restore what was on it?

Just turned it on one day, and there was nothing in it! No power outages or accidental re-formatting. Is there a way to restore, like on your PC?
please help! Have/had tons of photos on it, so sad....

Hi there Mopar 4 me,

In case the data on the drive is really important, it may be a good idea to contact a data recovery company.

If the drive is in a healthy state and in case the data is not overwritten, you should be able to recover at least some of it. You can use some data recovery tool. There are many threads on data recovery in the community.

Once you recover the data, it would be a good idea to test the drive with a tool that can provide a SMART report.

Apart from all this, you should always back up the important data.
