Ping fluctuating when playing games and daily browsing

So recently I've just switched my ISP from Sky (38Mbps) to Virgin Media (50Mbps) to get slightly faster internet but upon playing games I realised my ping spikes on 400 constant then drops back down to 30.

I'm currently using a powerline adapter to connect to the router. According to some recent results on speedtest.net it shows:

Ping: 10 to 200 ms
Download Speed: 2 to 50 Mbps
Upload Speed: 2.5 to 3 Mbps

I assume that there must be something wrong if I am getting a download speed of 2 Mbps and a high ping. My download speed also spikes when I am trying to download a game on Steam, it could peak to 6.5 Mbps then drop to 500 Kbps.

Even browsing things like reddit and youtube feel slower even though the internet should be supposedly faster.

Solution
In command prompt type netsh int ipv4 show subint

To set your MTU in your router, you will have to access the router through your browser.

I've calculated that my optimum MTU setting is 1500 but how do I know if I'm using that setting?
