I built a computer without an optical drive and want to install my copy of Windows 7. I figured I could just use my other computer to copy all of the content off of the disc and paste it on the usb drive and use that to install Windows on my new computer. Do I really need to follow all of these steps? Or can I simply just copy and paste from disc to usb? Thanks.

No you cant just copy and paste to the usb.
The USB has to be bootable, so just copying wont do anything.

What you need to do is
1) Insert CD into a computer with cd drive, open cd burning program like Roxio, nero or other (if you do not have one then go download ashampoo burning studio free). Then create ISO image from windows 7 cd.
2) Download Windows 7 USB DVD Tool form here: https://wudt.codeplex.com/
3) Install ISO image to USB.

Microsoft used to provide online download of win 7 iso which eliminated step one, unfortunately there is no longer an official download, and unofficial downloads always have the risk of viruses.
