Hey there helping a friend with his alienware x51 r2.

He wanted to upgrade his video card and didn't have enough power so the plan is to hook up an external power supply to his rx 480.

We currently have the rx 480 mounted in the computer and initially tried hooking EVGA 120-G1-0650-RX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified psu into the video card but it doesn't seem to be powering it. I know that some of the older psu's needed the 24 pin connecter to either be attached or use the paper clip trick to make it think it is, but few people i talked to said that doesn't matter with a fully modular power supply. Any help or feed back would be great not sure if I need to attach the whole psu to the comp or if I am just missing a minor detail, but I have seen videos of people on youtube with just the 6 or 8 pin power cable going into the video card solo and it not having powering problems.

The card and computer will turn on with the ac power plugged in from the original external ac adapter, but the power draw can't keep up with the hardware so I know the rx480 runs on the board and just needs more power. I have seen several people with gtx 1080s and such getting powered externally on the same x51 build they just don't show how or what they did to do it. I can link this dudes video just so you can see hes only got the one vga power cable coming in from his external powersupply. It looks simple but i know somethings not adding up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khbU3KtO2dw This is what i want to do with the current hardware.
