I just dropped my Intel i7 6700k onto a very thinly carpeted surface with concrete beneath. It slipped out of my hands from about 1 meter high. It was not in the plastic casing.

Will it be okay?

Solution

What's there to clean? I mean, I guess some dirt from the carpet in theory could get on it, but then again I put my CPUs on cardboard boxes and stuff and it is fine. I don't think there is really anything to worry about. If you want you can kick out the isopropyl alcohol and clean everything but it is probably not necessary.

I don't think CPUs are that sensitive to physical damage. Just like SSDs. You can play basketball with an SSD and it'll be alright. CPUs, very lightweight and should not have an issue falling onto a carpeted surface, let alone a hard one.

Alright I sure hope so. Is there any way maybe for me to clean it off? I know for the one side I can use rubbing alcohol, but what about the side with the sensors? It landed on a pretty rough, old, dirty carpet.

Keep it away from the carpet because the motherboard could build up static while your building. Touch metal to ground yourself out. If it doesn't work theres nothing you can do. But don't loose hope it might still work. If the pins break on the CPU your in trouble. If you have money laying around buy another one.

It's a new Intel i7; it doesn't have pins... and it was already on a carpet. Unfortunately I have no money to spend on a new one :(

Most (if not all) companies are pretty understanding with the whole "I dropped it" thing. If you get your parts in and it doesn't work (which it probably will work), just send it back or shoot 'em an email.

I actually bought it new in box from someone over /r/hardwareswap (similar to ebay). Once I am able to test it out will there be a way to tell if it is only slightly damaged? (Still works just not performing optimally)
