Solution
Right click on the playback devices in windows sound.

To switch from speakers connected to the system and a set of standard headphones with not mic.
For each one plugged in you have to select it as the default playback device.

If your speaker setup varies in setup of how many speakers is uses, or your head phones.

For example speakers 2.1 or stereo sound.
headset 5.1 surround sound.

When set as the default playback device.
You must right click on speakers, HD audio.
Or head phones and select the speaker configuration of each.

Otherwise you will not hear any sound if selected as a default playback device in windows sound manager.

Example: headphones with 5.1 surround, speaker configuration must be set to 5.1.

Set to 2.1 or stereo...

So... I'm slightly confused, need clarification. You're saying that your headset doesn't work until you plug it in? If so, yes, I agree. If not (I'm assuming not) do you mean a different set of speakers? Are you sure you're testing the correct set in your volume control?

Set to 2.1 or stereo sound for speaker output = No sound even though you see the sound output bar of windows for the sound level moving Jammie98
