Good morning everyone,

Specs are below

So, i purchased an MSI R9 390 a few days ago and had it delivered yesterday. Me being overly excited, I went straight to PC and installed it. It was running fine after all the drivers were updated. But only for 5 minutes. After testing out a few games, my PC randomly shut off, and after leaving it for 30 mins to cool, it wouldn't power up.

My guess is that it was my crappy cheap PSU. I cant remember exactly what make and model it was, but trust me it was awful. It was so bad that i had to use a dual molex to 6 pin pcie to power the 390. I also used an 8 pin which was straight from the PSU.

The questions are as follows:

1. Was it the cheap PSU that caused this?
2. Or was it the dual molex to 6 pin adapter i used?
3. I'm guessing that my PSU is dead but i have no way of testing it. So I have purchased this PSU, do you guys think it will be enough?

yes, using adapters like that on a cheap psu is asking to loose your whole system

the one you linked is garbage

Much better deal on a great psu:

Thanks for getting back to me so quick.

I'm just curious as i dont know much about PSU's, but what makes the PSU I linked bad, and what makes the one you linked good?

components

the xfx is superbly built and has quality "guts"

the cooler master is a tin can

A good way of telling is how much you pay for a power supply unit of a set wattage output.

Round £90 for a good well branded 700w power supply.

Also how many amps it can provide from the 12v power rails of the PSU higher amp rating is better.

The amount of circuit protection it lists the PSU has.
And the brand name of the PSU

agreed, pathetic amps on the 12v rail are a dead giveaway

a lot of these low tier makers actually lie about the wattage of their units, that "700w" could very well be a chinese 300w bomb
