Alright, so here's the deal. When I upgraded my RAM from 2gig (was 4 but one stick was bad) to 16, my PC wouldn't boot. This was something like 5 years ago. After some sleuthing, I found its source was the CPU and the RAM sticks not liking each other very much. They're compatible, but they just never played nice... so to get them to, I set the CPU timing manually in BIOS and I honestly can't remember if I changed anything other than that. It was mostly sniping that one thing.

Anyway, after setting that, it booted fine every time for 5 years. Until a super bad storm hit us yesterday and my PC shut off in a less than favorable way... and was giving me weird screens I hadnt seen before when it booted up again talking about overclocking. I guess when I set the timing manually, it was considered "overclocking"? I stupidly had it switch my stuff to factory settings... just to get out of the screen... and now its back to not booting up again.

I'm trying to find what I set the timings to again, but its not coming easy... so if anyone can help me find what I'm looking for, that would be amazing...

Motherboard: ASUS M4A77TD
RAM: Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz 16GB (4x4GB) 9-9-9-24 1.50V

System: Windows 7 64bit
Processor: AMD Phenom 2 X4 955 3.20GHz
Power: Corsair

I'm pretty sure I set the voltage too... now that I think about it. And I'm pretty sure what I need to do is put the RAM specs I posted above into BIOS... but just want confirmation where and how to do that before I play with it (since it's been YEARS since I played with it last).

UPDATE: I got my computer to boot after sapping the power and popping the battery off the motherboard for a short time... went into BIOS to try and manually set the timing... and this is the screen I got after I exited to startup: http://imgur.com/TQetZgt

It booted after this alright... but I know when I restart it, it's gonna give me problems again because I obviously didn't put in the info correctly. Currently googling more step-by-steps to see what I did wrong. :heink:

UPDATE TWO: Here's some snips of my CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD http://imgur.com/C7xJh2l

My PC booted fine. The storm didn't fry it. Actually, after the power dropped and it came back on, I was on it until like midnight. The issue was this morning it didn't want to turn on, and was acting like it did 5 years ago when I changed the RAM and it didn't like it.

I am on the PC now, typing this, so I know the issue is I have to put the timings in manually like I did last time... I'm just fuzzy on where to put the numbers, since it's been 5 years.

Basically, the issue is its back to factory settings, and my PC won't boot with factory settings because it doesn't like to play nice with my RAM. That's all. :p I got it to boot this time by draining the power, hitting f10 to go to bios as I turn it on... and then exiting out to that image I added... I know its strange. Like I said, the things are compatible... but they don't like to play together. >_>

I just really don't want to have to repeat this process every time I boot my PC, ya know?

Here's generally the cycle I'm in right now...
1. Press power button
2. PC turns on, fans spin... but in an up and down manner, speeding up then slowing down over and over.
3. Restart PC.
4. The "overclocking failed!" screen comes up, and if I hit f2 to load default values and continue, it'll boot.

Problem. This sequence of events occurs with every attempt to boot... with the fun little twist of needing to sap the power and pop the motherboard battery first, if I want to get into BIOS and then eventually get to the overclocking failed screen.

Ah, life... you little rascal...

ok, did you try to clear the BIOS and reset to factory settings?

I'm pretty sure that's what it did when I was on the overclocking failed screen and it made me hit F2 to boot... it said it was resetting to default values.

Or would resetting to factory settings be different than that?

I've tried checking the ram sticks one at a time... found one that might be faulty, but the same cycle is happening even without that stick in...

I'm really getting quite aggravated. :I

Reiteration of the cycle:
1. Start pc
2. Fans whirr up and down, no beeps, nothing happens
3. Pop CMOD battery, drain power to reset BIOS
4. Start pc
5. Get screen telling me to set BIOS or go with defaults
5a. If I tell it to do defaults, I get a blue screen on load and need to restart

6. After saving my changes to BIOS, f10ing out to save changes... pc restarts
6a. Changes I made:
-date/time
-dram config changed from auto to 9 9 9 24... 1T
-dram voltage set to 1.5v
-dram speed/freq to 1333

7. Same fan whirr
8. Restart pc again
9. Get the "overclock failed" screen
10. Hit f2 to "load default settings and continue"
11. PC boots fine, everything works, smooth sailing
12. Shut down pc... aaaaand we're back to 1

Ok, PC fixed.

My problem was eventually isolated to just the BIOS, and after flashing it, I can now reliably boot. I avoided trying it until last because of most literature I found warned that there was the possibility of bricking the system if something went wrong with it. But after speaking with some tech savvy people, I tried it and it went off without a hitch.

Hurray! Have a great week, all. Thanks for the help, Lodocarbo. ;)
