How do I know that the PSU will work well with my GPU?

Hi,

I bought a 500w PSU that has 1x 6 pin PCI and have a GTS 250 that use 2x 6 pin.
The problem is, It didn't boot up. I use one 6 pin and 1 molex to 6 pin to power the card.

The computer start up up then around 3-5 second shut down and start up again itself with blank screen. The card tested twice at the seller's place and work fine.

I feel like it's a PSU problem so how do I know which PSU to buy? After doing a research about PSU I learn that watt is not that important thing to look up. It has something to do with 12v current.
My PSU is 500 watt, 12v 17a and I use one molex to 6 pin to power up the card.

How do I choose a right PSU for my GPU?

A good 500w PSU is likely going to have a 12v rating of around 40a, and should have the proper connections for the gpu. 17a is just horrible. The 80 plus ratings(bronze, silver gold, etc) are simple efficiency ratings and should not be used as a quality guide. Here's a link to the PSU tier list http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html, go for a tier 1 or 2 unit, you can go tier 3 if if needed for budget reasons but they may not have the best longevity, avoid the tier 4 and especially avoid the tier 5 units.

Do you mind google this "dtech dt500"? Well, It's not Bronze rated. According to my believe it's probably stone rated. It's 25$.
I've been using some website to understand how PSU and GPU work. It's seem that my system + GTS 250 = 300w which mean that it require 300w/12v = 25A.

My PSU +12v has only 17A but I'm not clear if this the reason the card refuse to boot up. Also does molex to 6 pin provide enough power to GPU?

I heard that flashing bios and stuff can solve the problem but I don't think that Motherboard and its driver is the problem since both card and motherboard is made during the same time.

Thank for reply!

Your psu is tier 5 on this list.
It is unsafe to use and the 500w will not be delivered to the 12v rails where a modern cpu and graphics card need it.

You want a tier 1 or 2 unit if possible, never more than tier 3.

A GTS250 is an older gen card that needs 450w and one 6 pin connector normally.
But, if your GTX250 needs a second 6 pin, then that adds 75w and you are underpowered.
Here is a chart of psu requirements:

The correct PSU for your build will depend on what you have in the rest of your system.
List the full system specs for better advice.

The PSU you have is real suspect as others have said, So choose a Gold or Platinum rated PSU of good quality from EVGA, Corsair or Seasonic. Bronze rated PSUs usually are of poor quality and meant for general purpose PCs.

The PSU is the life blood of your system and not to be underestimated.

As far as a Bios flash is concerned, Do not flash the Bios unless you have constant instability as there is a risk.

This is wrong. There are many bronze rated PSUs that are good quality. As I mentioned earlier in this post the 80 plus certifications should NOT be used as a build quality guide.
