Upgrade timing advice

Hey guys,

I am planning on upgrading my CPU (and with it motherboard and RAM, since I am running a Phenom II X4 945 at the moment). While my CPU is very slow, I would consider postponing a replacement for a maximum of 6 more months if that'd give me a much better price / CPU option for the same price.

I was planning on getting the Core-i5 6600K with an overclocker board. My graphics card is a GTX 950.

My questions:

a) should I wait? Do you expect me to get a much better price in (up to) 6 months or a much better option for the same price (€230 at the moment, not sure on british prices)

b) If I should wait, what am I waiting for? ;)

c) If waiting is not very promising, what board would you suggest? I'd like it to support overclocking. Generally, I'd like a good deal but the board should be at least middle class. USB 3.1 if that makes sense, supporting high tact (?) RAM.. (not an expert, just jotting stuff down I read somewhere :D)

Thanks a bunch! I realize I can find answers if I look long enough but I think some of you are already experts and can help me out in no time! :D

When I last checked a few months ago, an overclocked 6600k was not very good value for money.
A locked 6600 is still very fast, but is cheaper, includes a free cooler and needs a less expensive motherboard. Much more bang for your buck.

As for timing - don't bother waiting - I can't see any reason for the price to drop, and there is nothing wrong with Skylake.

Every year Intel releases new CPUs with slightly higher (~5%) IPC and slightly lower (~5%) power consumption, at about the same price. Intel has not made public plans to replace their existing 4-core consumer CPUs with 6-core chips at the same price. So, by waiting a year, you can expect to get maybe 5% in the same price bracket.

Next processor on line for Intel is Kaby-lake, a minor improvement to Skylake, mostly graphics to be honest. Should be out around Nov-Dec. There will be a new 200 series chipset though. AMD should have new Zen FX processors by Q1 2017, but they may just be a nice high core count alternative to Intel's HEDT lineup.

Pretty much any Z170 board over $100 is going to get you want you want. USB 3.1 is still an added feature, so that will up the price a bit. If you don't have any 3.1 devices, probably not that big a deal. You can always get an add-on card later. ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, ASRock, can't really make a bad choice.

Overclocking isn't strictly necessary, and you then do have to buy your own cooler with the K chips. It can be entertaining, and there are some tangible benefits.

Sweet spot for memory Cost/Performance is DDR4 2666 with a CAS of 15

GTX950 doesn't pair that well with essentially the best available, so I would look at a GTX1060 upgrade when available.
