Hello

I recently bought an AMD Phenom II X4 965 B.E and installed it on my iMedia S1300 motherboard. The very first time I opened it with the new processor the fans (all of them) ran like crazy (2500-4500 RPM). I checked my BIOS and it said the CPU 90+ degrees hot, and it was rising until 128 degrees. After that the thing went -13 degrees and instantly shutted down the computer. I felt the CPU underneath the HS and it wasn't even that hot (35~, probably less). The HS wasnt hot either. As for thermal paste I use the good ol' vaseline-and-toothpaste, the reason for that is I need something to keep my cpu cool for now so that I can buy actual paste later. The heatsink itself is pretty stuck in. What could be the problem? Is it normal that my fans are running that fast? Does my PSU have anything to do with this?

Thanks.

Is it overclocked? Also go for a real thermal paste. Artic MX4 is cheap and reliable (there is a thermal paste reviews here). If the die reaches 125 degree Celsius it will start melting (CPU is made of silicone. It melts at 125° C) so if that's a real temp it's shutting down for its own good. Also it could be faulty thermometer. Mine is broken (-2° C under heavy load. Room is well above 26°C)

Are you sure the motherboard supports a 125W CPU? Can you provide a link to it with the specs and supported processors? The issue that you describe most likely is caused by the VRM that's trying to save itself by throttling the CPU.

I'll check if the CPU is overclocked later on. You ddo that in the BIOS, right?
The current thermal paste I have right now is temporal. I will buy one later. And I doubt that the CPU was even that hot because the form hasn't physically changed or anything, showing any signs of it actually melting down. Plus it goes to 125 degrees in like 2 minutes from booting.

Now that you mention it, I doubt that it supports my new CPU... Unfortunately, the iMedia S1300 MoBo is shit so I have to buy a new one. There isn't even a link to what it supports or not, but it probably doesn't support it so I guess I'll give my PC an upgrade. Thanks :)

The AMD Athlon II X2 220... So there's a reason for my acts xD
But I was thinking of buying a Gigabyte GA-78 LMT USB3.0 motherboard. I assume that I don't have to actually change hard drive or PSU to use a certain MoBo, right?

I'd love to buy a GA-990FXA for my CPU, but the money isn't there yet :\

But as long as my GA-78 LMT supports my 965 then it's okay. And I wont overclock it like crazy.

What CPU cooler? Ideally you use one that blows enough air on the VRM heat sink to keep it relatively cool.

I dunno actually... I will look into that later on. But I don't know what heat sink type I should have. I'm used to traditional round heat sinks... Now I noticed that you have to use a square HS with the fan on the side of it. Will any HSF fit my MoBo in that size?

Where did you see such a requirement? Most inexpensive motherboards work better with a top-down blower style cooler like the stock one or the AMD Wraith that helps cooling the VRM.

Actually, that was a stupid guess I did there... However I did find a HSF that looks pretty good in my case at least. Its the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. The fan is on the side of the heat sink so it could cool down the VRM, that is if not too much heat blows out from the cpu...

That cooler doesn't cool the VRM because it blows air above the heat sink, but you should be fine if you limit the overclock to prevent VRM throttling. Read this review and you'll have a better understanding of the difference between a tower and a top-down cooler; in particular check the VR temperatures on page 2 (the MSI 970 Gaming motherboard has a much better VRM than yours).

Look into the ASUS 970 Pro Aura board, I personally own it and after figuring it out it works very nicely. It has a 7+1 power phase unlike 4+1 which the 970 chipset boards generally have. The VRM's get cooled well, and the NB has a nice heatsink to keep it's temp relatively low (the 970 chipset tends to run very hot). It's a bit cheaper than the GA-990FXA motherboard mentioned.

*Edit - It also has M.2 w/nvme support and USB 3.1 if you're into that.

@TJ Hooker English isn't my native language :D and in school I was told that silicon melts at 125°C (<- I knew it's too low). Not to mention that silicon and silicone are two completely different words in my language -_-

OP, replace that "Vaseline and toothpaste" thingy and use one of these:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermal-paste-performance-benchmark,3616.html
As for the VRM either DIY it with small piece of aluminum and heat binding thermal paste (thermal paste, that acts as glue when heated) or get any of the recommended motherboard

if youre on a budget then the 78lmt-usb will do the job,if you want a good downblower then the raijintek pallas if available to you(easily available europe/central america)
if not then the deepcool gabriel (tends to be asian/indian market-overpriced everywhere else)

Holy shit I feel like I'm getting hardcore roasted for using vaseline and toothpaste by you guys xD

I live in Sweden and people here doesn't seem to buy computer parts. Just actual PC for thousands of dollars (Not the actual value if anyone assumes :p). So parts aren't much for sales, or they cost so much. Thankfully I found this MoBo and it wasn't crazy expensive. I don't want a crazy good pc. Just something that will stall me for my possibly next upgrade. And don't grab your flame torches yet; I'll buy thermal paste when I'll buy the motherboard. I accidently bought Arctic ALIMINIUM which happened to not be suited for cpu cooling :/

I appreciate the help from all of you btw! :)
