Hi!

I own a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD (brand new condition) but I don't know how to configure or format it. I'm not sure yet whether I want to use it as an external drive or as internal storage (I have the right cables to do both). So how do I configure/format it correctly if I want to use it for media files as storage and how do I configure/format it if I want to use it as a boot drive?

When I plug it into my PC, nothing shows up and I can't find it in the boot menu...

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

You will need to either connect it to a USB port via an external USB-to-SATA adapter or open up your case and connect it via a SATA cable to a spare SATA connector. Once that is done, if the OS does not recognize the drive automatically and ask if you want to Format it, go into Device Manager and go to 'Disk Management' under 'Storage'. Once in DM, the drive SHOULD show up in the drive list. If it does not, right-click on the...

How are you connecting the drive to your system? Do you already have an SSD for your Boot drive? If not, I would recommend using the Samsung for your Boot drive as it will provide a tremendous performance boost to your system. The retail versions of Samsung SSD's come with a CD that contains Migration and Performance improvement software. If you have the Vendor version of the drive, you most likely won't have the CD. You CAN download it from Samsungs Support site.

I already have a stock SSD of 128GB that (I think) is manufactured by SanDisk, in my HP Envy 700-203ed. But I'm not sure if I want to use it for an older laptop I have or as an external drive. Thanks for the answer about configuring it as a boot drive. Do you know how I can configure it as an external drive?

Once that is done, if the OS does not recognize the drive automatically and ask if you want to Format it, go into Device Manager and go to 'Disk Management' under 'Storage'. Once in DM, the drive SHOULD show up in the drive list. If it does not, right-click on the Disk Management name on the left-hand side of page and select 'Refresh'. Once you see the drive, you can now Format the drive and begin using it. If that does not show the drive, you need to make sure you can see it in the BIOS during startup and that the USB ports are active.
