[Intel Core i7-870 or Intel Core i5-3340] Im helping to build a friends computer and he can get these for the same price which is better when the psu isn't a problem?

The i5 would perform slightly better for gaming and needs an LGA 1155 motherboard, which will likely be easier to find than the LGA 1156 MB the 870 would need, and also more likely to have decent support for USB 3, SATA 6.0GB/s and PCIe 3.0. So I'd go with the i5.
