MoBo: Asus M5a97 evo r2.0
CPU: Fx 8350

I used to have a fx 6300 CPU, and I overclocked it just by changing the CPU ratio to 20.5 to give 4.1Ghz stable. However, it did downclock to 1.4G/1.5hz when idle.

Now I have 8350, again I tired to change the CPU ratio to 21 and it did clock to 4.2Ghz, however, it won't downclock when idle. When I leave the CPU ratio on auto, I get about 4.1Ghz on load, jumping to 4.2Ghz (on few/random cores due to turbo I guess). And it does downcock to 1.4/1.5Ghz when idle. What am I doing wrong?

All other settings are default. Cool n Quiet and C6 states are at default values (enabled).

FML! Just changed the power option to balanced instead of high performance, and now it downclocks when Idle. However, its strange that the "Auto" setting in BIOS was overriding the high performance settings, as in, the CPU would downclock when idle whereas it wasn't suppose to!

well, I have the LE version of that mobo and an 8350, sooo, at least I have an idea. maybe your auto/high perf EZ setting was turning on hpc mode?

Edit: Actually. I know this is several months late, (november now) but did you use manual voltage? The m5a97 series won't let your cpu run below it's set speed if it's on manual it seems... If you however use offset it works fine. Just a thought for anyone who reads this down the line
