Looking for SSD - First time user of SSD

I'm looking for a good reliable SSD for my OS. Right now I have Windows 7 64Bit on a 1TB HDD but with the Windows 10 free upgrade ending this month I want to take advantage of the offer.

That being said, this will be the first time that I've used an SSD so I'm not sure what to expect, So far with my life of computers I've only ever used standard harddrives.

I'm not sure what to look for in an SSD but I do know I want to put some other applications other than the OS on the SSD, I'm not sure how much space Windows 10 will take up, And I'm not sure how many updates Windows 10 will have in the future and how much space the updates will take up.

I have an idea on how much I want to spend about $65-$120 and I guess around 240Gb of storage. I checked this SSD but I'm not sure if its good its the [urlExt=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820156066&cm_re=CT240BX200SSD1-_-20-156-066-_-Product]Crucial BX200 240Gb [/urlExt]. I'm not sure if it would be good for me though.

Could someone suggest an SSD for what I need in my price range?

I would like to use NewEgg US or Amazon US, As there's not really any computer stores where I am, If you have another website that would be fine as well.

I have used a lot of the BX200 drives, they have great performance for the price. With SSD's you want to look at the 4k performance, not so much the max read and write. So if you compare a cheap $35-40 SSD to something like the bx200 or the 850 evo you will notice the 4k performance of those drives is quite a bit different even though the read and writes may be similar.

Mostly Steam, Mod Organizer, Basically all the Skyrim stuff, but that's games.

I plan to put VLC Player, Skype, My antivirus kaspersky, Malwarebytes, and Plex.

For my other games I have a dedicated HHD for them, Only Skyrim will most likely be on the SSD.

So the Crucial BX200 240Gb is my solution?

Besides what I've read in the thread about installing, Is there anything else I should know?

Not to sure about this "Set your SATA configuration (or something along those lines) to AHCI " If I don't do this what might happen?

Any motherboard made within the last 2-4 years will default to the right setting for an ssd, unless you have something like a dell or hp then I've noticed sometimes they will default to raid for whatever reason. Just make sure you have extra sata cables so your build doesn't go on hold until you can get some Most motherboards will come with at least 2 sata cables. You could even order a 5 or 10 dollar usb 3.0 drive when you order your ssd so you can install your os really fast.

My Mobo is a MSI Gaming Z87-G45.

I think it will default automatically? Not sure though.

Will windows also default the SSD so that it wont auto defrag?

Right now I'm on Windows 7 but once I get the SSD I will be upgrading to Windows 10.

Sometimes it won't default to the SSD as the first boot device. I actually had a board similar to yours before, only the one I had was the g65 and it defaulted to the right settings for the SSD. Just make sure you use sata port 0. the last two ports aren't intel sata ports so I don't think they are as fast.

My ASROCK H110 mobo has two BIOS driver settings for sata/AHCI. Individual disks can be switched between the HDD and SSD driver. The HDD/SSD selection is not automatic for some reason.

You will need to set a few things manually for Win7 running on an SSD. Get at least 8GB of RAM and turn off the paging for all drives on the SSD. Turn off all drive indexing as it just wastes time on an SSD. Turn off automatic defrag; do it manually only when needed. Automatic system restore points can be detrimental to SSD life, if done too often. I keep just one restore point, and turn off automatic creation. Backups on SSDs are blindingly fast with compression set low. Backups are essential. Do not use any SSD for archiving important data.

The OCZ Trion 150 is a newly released TLC disk ($63 USD for 240GB on Amazon.) I've read one review stating the TLC streaming write is now up to 150MB/s ... pretty good for a TLC drive.

Ignore the doom and gloom about cheap TLC drives. They are 1/4 the price of SLC drives and last just as long, if not longer. (Expensive SLC drives are notorious for dead controllers, and ALL data is lost in one fell swoop.) For most users TLC drives go just as fast as any SLC when used as a system disk.

Cinelerra users, all 20 of them worldwide, will of course disagree with my view of TLC drives.
