I purchased a Dell Inspiron 3847 for streaming primarily - thinking I could upgrade the graphics card later. I was wrong. The graphics card doesn't work and according to Dell there is nothing I can do. So I want to upgrade the motherboard/cpu using the existing case that would allow my new card to be used.

Approximate Purchase Date: August 2016

Budget Range:
<$500

System Usage from Most to Least Important:
Gaming - have a GTX 970 graphics card. Need to get a motherboard and cpu that fits my case. Possible RAM if my existing doesn't work

Parts Not Required:
Power - have 650w
Monitors - have 2
Harddrive - have 1tb
CD - will use existing

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:

Country:
USA

Overclocking:
Don't care, not sure how to do this

Additional Comments:
Is there anyway to use the existing CPU? This is probably a stupid question... but I have a i7-4790 CPU @ 3.6GHz. I guess I never thought you could remove this and put on another motherboard? Anyway, the case is a Mini Tower (I think) aka MicroAtx case.

Solution
Yes, you sure can re-use that 4790, you'd just need a socket 1150 motherboard. The following mobo chipsets were for socket 1150 cpu's - H81,B85,Q85,Q87,H87,Z87

With the RAM, you'd want DDR3 sticks.

Plus you'd need to make sure the case would take the 970 (size-wise) and that your PSU had the required connectors for the 970
