I've been researching online on upgrading my old computer's CPU and I was considering the Pentium D 935 because it has better L2 cache and clockspeed, but I searched on Game Debate and found that it was actually worse. How is this possible since this CPU has a clockspeed two times faster than my old CPU right now?

HP's site says the best CPU that board supports is the Core 2 Duo E4400, which wouldn't be a big jump, and may not be sufficient depending on what it is you want this computer to do. You're best off just looking at a new build at this point if...

Clock speed is only directly comparable between processors of the same generation. The E2140 uses the "Allendale" core which is based on the Core microarchitecture that's WAY more efficient than the Netburst architecture the Pentium D uses. Both are somewhat crappy processors though; what's your current CPU/motherboard/PC? That'll help me/us find better options.

Different architectures. The Pentium D is an older CPU based on the flawed Netburst architecture Intel was running with during the early 2000s, where they ramped up the clockspeeds as high as they could at the cost of the processor getting very little done with each clock cycle, running hot, and consuming lots of power.

The Pentium E2140 is based on the newer Core 2 architecture, which gets something like twice the amount of work done per clock cycle compared to the old Pentium D, that's why the E2140 can be faster than the Pentium D while being clocked much lower. If you're looking for a CPU upgrade while keeping your motherboard, you're going to need to post which board you have if you want suggestions. If you're looking to play modern games, you really need a Core 2 Quad at minimum, preferably with the ability to overclock it. Even then, you probably are better off saving up money to move to a newer platform, you're currently working with 10 year old technology, there have been a lot of advances since then, and even the fastest Core 2 Quads are starting to struggle a bit on newer games.

Its an old Compaq Presario SR5310F. For specifications here's a link --> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01297188

The best processor that's guaranteed to work for that board is the Core 2 Duo E4700. There's a very slim chance you might be able to use a Pentium E5800, but I doubt it. You can check by opening up CPU-Z and seeing which version of the 945GC chipset you have; if it's A2, the E5800 has a much better chance of working. Otherwise, stick with the E4700.
