So I've wanted to upgrade my prebuilt PC's motherboard. (The motherboard is so ugly I can't stand to look at it through my case's window. The motherboard is a Gateway IPISB-VR) I have the motherboard that I want. It is compatible with all my components, but I have read some things that changing the motherboard will affect windows, and some sites say to back up everything before the switch. So, is it safe to change motherboards or should I stay with my current motherboard?

Also, is upgrading the cpu safe?

Solution
Upgrading the cpu and motherboard is perfectly safe.

The only thing is you may need to get windows again. As windows ties itself with your system. So after you change motherboard and cpu, windows thinks it is a new computer and you need to activate it. Call microsoft and tell them your motherboard was fried, then you got a new one. Most of the time they will activate the windows again.
