Can I use a 6 pin in an 8 pin connector on my GPU?

Hello, my Asus GTX 970 Strix arrived today, only to find out it requires one 8 pin connector, when I only have two 6 pins. I have ordered a 6 to 8 pin adapter which should come by the end of the week, but till then could I get away with using one of my 6 pin connectors in the 8 pin? I play games like Rocket League, DOOM, & Minecraft.

Well I consulted with some other members and it looks like what you are doing is not unsafe as I initially thought, I figured since you are only using a 6pin connector the gpu would try to draw more power through that cable than it is rated for. It should work for the time being however I would recommend you replace that psu whenever you can afford with something of higher quality. If that power supply decides to die which it very well might soon since you said you got it out of a pre built ages ago, it could take the rest of your pc with it. I would not trust the aged likely very cheap protection circuitry in that psu to protect your computer in the event that it fails.

Well it looks like I only have 2 6 pin connectors? I tried it and the card seems to be working amazingly in every game I've thrown at it. As for my PSU, all I know it is a 500w PSU, as I bought this PC prebuilt off somebody else ages ago. Is there a way of checking it?

The TDP of the strix 970 is 225watts, with one 6pin you are providing the card 150watts. So if the card tries to draw more than 150watts its either going to crash or pull more power through the 6pin and pcie slot on your motherboard than those are rated for. That psu is low quality and does not have the required connectors for a 970 I would definitely recommend you replace it, whether its working fine or not what you are doing is not recommended and may not even be safe.

I don't think I can replace my PSU at the moment, so should I cancel my order of the one 6 to 8 pin adapter and buy 2 6 pins to one 8 pin adapter? What do you mean not safe? Sorry if I sound pushy but I'm just curious and to be honest, a tad worried about it.

Thanks for this answer, very helpful indeed. So will the card not take more power then the cable can produce? If not, why? I want to be able to understand this problem, I'm quite interested really!

As far as I am aware, the extra two pins are just for grounding. Someone may be able to confirm. If this is the case in would go on to say, it makes no major difference.
