SATA cable too loose for the HDD

I tries to connect my SATA PSU cable to my HDD, but it is loose. It will fit and stay there but it pops out easily. Is this normal? The PSU is a EVGA SuperNova G2 750w.

Is there a fair amount of tension on the cable when it's attached to your HDD? SATA power cables don't latch on like SATA data cables, but it should still stay on. It shouldn't really be loose on its own, unless the connector is a bit off in size from the manufacturer.

Not quite. The cable pops out by just shaking the rest of it a little bit. My other PSU attached to the HDD perfectly.

Seems like a cable that was made out of spec. Do the other SATA power cables come up w/ the same result? If so, only a couple choices really. Some PSUs have aftermarket modular cables available, or you could get creative w/ some zip ties.

i saw this a few months ago on a client pc. his hdd had the plastic in the middle of the port missing so the cable was loose and did not sit right.

it fried a psu when it shorted out. a second psu caught fire when it shorted again!!!

check the cable and the hdd port itself for any damage like this. if it's the cable replace it. if it's the hdd itself replace it. not worth it when i have seen first hand what can happen with loose cables on a stata drive!!

Yeah, they all feel the same.

Would it make a difference if I used zip ties? It won't damage anything?

There doesn't seem to be anything between the cable and the HDD. I doubt it's the HDD since I just tried the SATA of my old PSU and it fits.

as i said, client pc i saw was held in place with a zip tie and when it shorted it caught the cable on fire and it worked its way back to the psu taking a lot of stuff with it. holding it in won't stop a short and will keep it from being ejected by the spark when it shorts out.

not a good idea at all. i can upload some pics if you don't believe me!! still have it sitting in my workspace to show others who don't think it's a big deal!! and it was a quality psu that caught fire not some cheap budget one!!

every sata cable is loose? might need to return the psu for a new one if this is the case. it is a standard size so no need for them to be loose.

It does seem odd they all would be loose. One cable being defective is understandable.

only thing i can think of is the psu is off and needs to be returned. especially if the old psu connects nice and snug.

Since the PSU is modular, couls it be possible that the cables for this exact kind of HDD are missing? Like, replace a cable and not the whole thing.

The G2 750 has a ton of SATA cables. I highly doubt all of them are faulty. Have you tried other ones? It comes with more than one SATA chain. Maybe the cables with the G2 just require a bit more amount of force to push in?

I tried all of the SATA chains. But I certainly haven't tried giving it more than a little bit of force in fear of damaging something.

Very, very little. My old PSU required almost mo force to sit in right. Let me see if I can get the SATA in, wait a sec.

Yeah you might want to try a little more force. "Very very little" doesn't sound like enough to me.

Yeah, no. It just stops going thru at a certain point, and it doesnt feel like I can put more force in it without breaking something.
